1.1. Introduction

Welcome, everyone! My name is Alejandra Fernández-Torija Ibáñez, and I am delighted to present my final project report for the WP Credits programme. This post summarises my recent contributions to the WordPress ecosystem as a translator, the hurdles I managed to overcome, and the invaluable lessons I have absorbed. My sincere hope is that this reflection encourages more people to discover the rewarding world of open-source software!

1.2. Teams and Projects I Contributed To

• Teams: I dedicated my efforts to the WordPress Polyglots Team, an incredible community working tirelessly to break down language barriers for WordPress users globally.
• Project Focus: My specific task involved translating the Antimanual – Automate manual tasks with 24/7 AI Agent, ShopBuilder – WooCommerce Builder For Elementor, Tourfic – AI Powered Travel Booking, Hotel Booking & Car Rental WordPress Plugin, and User Registration & Membership – Free & Paid Memberships, Subscriptions, Content Restriction, User Profile, Custom User Registration & Login Builder plugin into Spanish (es_ES). My main objective was to ensure that the registration flow, frontend forms, and account dashboards felt intuitive, professional, and culturally appropriate for native Spanish speakers.

1.3. Learning Resources

To navigate the complexities of software localisation, I utilised several key resources:

• Guides/Tutorials: I thoroughly studied the official Polyglots Team Handbook and familiarised myself with the GlotPress environment. Additionally, I kept the official Spanish style guidelines open at all times to maintain terminology standards.
• Mentorship: The guidance of my mentor, Paula Carmona, was absolutely fundamental. Paula patiently taught me how to submit translations, ask for reviews from Project Translation Editors (PTEs), and decipher the underlying PHP code to understand the exact context of tricky English phrases.

1.4. Challenges and Solutions

Localising a plugin presents unique obstacles. Here are a couple of hurdles I faced and how I tackled them:

• Contextual Misunderstandings: Certain English terms, such as «Plan» or «Role», can shift meaning depending on where they appear within a membership system.
  • Solution: Under Paula’s mentorship, I learned to leverage the «View Context» tool in GlotPress and investigate the plugin’s source files on GitHub. If the meaning remained obscure, I proactively sought advice in the #polyglots Slack channel.
• Nailing the Right Tone: Translating error messages or restricted access warnings (e.g., «Content locked») initially resulted in phrasing that sounded too aggressive in Spanish.
  • Solution: I cross-referenced my work with the official Spanish glossary and worked closely with General Translation Editors to refine these strings, ensuring they sounded polite, helpful, and aligned with the standard WordPress voice.

1.5. My Contributions

Throughout this module, I successfully translated and verified numerous strings for the User Registration & Membership plugin, directly improving the user experience for the Spanish-speaking community.

1.6. Key Learnings from the WP Credits Course

Participating in the WP Credits course has been a truly eye-opening experience. My core takeaways include:

• Inclusivity Beyond Code: I realised that true digital accessibility encompasses language. Providing software in a user’s native tongue is vital for global empowerment.
• Effective Remote Teamwork: By using tools like Slack and GlotPress, I discovered the best practices for asynchronous communication within a diverse, international team.
• Community Spirit: The sheer warmth and collaborative nature of the WordPress community surpassed my expectations. It is inspiring to see volunteers united by a shared goal of democratising publishing.

1.7. New Skills Gained

This practical experience allowed me to significantly expand my professional skill set:

• Technical Skills: I became adept at using GlotPress, understanding translation memories, and performing basic code inspections within GitHub/SVN to establish string context.
• Soft Skills: I honed my linguistic precision, improved my remote communication capabilities, and learned how to embrace and implement constructive feedback during the peer-review process.

1.8. Personal Reflections and Next Steps

My time contributing to the Polyglots team has been exceptionally fulfilling. I was fascinated by the intricate puzzle that characterises software translation—it demands not just linguistic fluency, but a solid grasp of user interface design and empathy.

Looking ahead, I am committed to keeping the User Registration & Membership plugin up to date for the Spanish locale. My ultimate ambition is to become an official Project Translation Editor (PTE) for this tool, which would enable me to validate translations from future contributors.
